Team XO Shows Promise at Oregon
Preview
EUGENE, Ore.—20
March 2004—The men and women of Team XO took full
advantage of Eugene’s beautiful Spring weather with a strong
start to their outdoor season at the Oregon Preview on Saturday
at Hayward Field.
For the men, the highlights of the meet were in the field events,
where Team XO made a strong impact. Hammer throwers Adam Kriz
and Justin Carvalho finished first and second respectively in
the hammer throw, with Kriz’s winning toss sailing 215-4,
also an Olympic Trials qualifying mark. Santiago Lorenzo, the
former National Champion decathlete from the University of Oregon,
competed in the Javelin and 110-hurdles, placing third in both.
In the high jump, Kyley Johnson took first place with at hop of
7-¼. Johnson narrowly missed the Olympic Trials qualifying
mark of 7-2½ on his final two attempts. The Preview was
Johnson’s first meet since his trip to Boston earlier this
month for the Indoor Nationals competition. Fellow XO teammate
Jason Boness took third place in the high jump with a jump of
6-2¾. Also in the field events, XO long jumper Colin McArthur
placed second with a leap of 23-1¼.
On the track, the Team XO men were able to use the Preview as
a tune-up opportunity and made a solid performance.
In the 400-meters, former NAIA National Champion Ryan Chaney came
from behind to finish third place in a time of 48.12. Meanwhile,
middle distance runner Brayce Forsha placed a strong second in
the 1500 in 3:49.39.
On the women’s side, Team XO appeared strong in the field
events as well, with XO newcomer Mary Etter coming in first in
the discus with a throw of 165-3, and second in the shot put.
In the women’s running events, the 1500 proved to be an
exciting race and featured XO teammates Jenny Rodgers and Tara
Crowley finishing second and third, respectively. Rodgers crossed
the line in 4:33.05 and Crowley was right behind her in 4:34.41.
In other events, 400 hurdler Cameo Davis came out strong in her
debut race of the season, leading until she tripped on hurdle
eight and fell to the track. Davis picked herself up and finished
the race.
XO rookie Simidele Adeagbo, a four time All-American in the triple
jump, placed first in that event with a mark of 41-3 and third
in the 100 with a time of 12.44.
Looking ahead, Team XO is taking a small contingent down to Palo
Alto, Calif. on Saturday, March 27 for the Stanford Invitational.
The following week, a large team of white and blue will be headed
north to the Willamette Invite on April 3. The next home meet
for XO is scheduled for April 10 at Hayward Field with the Oregon
Mini Meet.
